This Swine Life: Hog Named 6-7 Spared by Miami-Dade Mayor.
While perhaps not at the identical stature as granting clemency to festive fowl, but the county's top official had her own presidential-style act this week by ritually sparing the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“The swine has done no wrong. She deserves this act of mercy. She has committed zero crimes,” Levine Cava said in a speech with clear references to the vast quantity of executive clemencies issued from the start of the beginning of a current administration.
“If we disregard eating six or seven apples per day,” she went on. “I hope she experiences a lengthy and joyful existence without fear.”
This ceremony, either celebrating or rejecting the region’s Hispanic tradition of consuming swine during the holidays, was created to emulate the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The swine, donated by a Coral Gables firefighter, was given its name from the popular vernacular phrase of young people shouting “6-7” – inspired by a musical verse – often for no discernable reason. The trend became so ubiquitous that a major dictionary recently made “six-seven” its annual vocabulary selection.
A New Life
Six Seven the pig is now scheduled to spend its days at a farm sanctuary “away from grills and cookware”, according to the organizers' announcement.
“The annual pig pardon has become a beloved tradition to open the end-of-year celebrations,” said the cafe owner, in a notably cheerful message.
“It embodies the essence of Miami: joyful, diverse, and rooted in traditions that unite the community. Annually, we are delighted to mark tradition and kindness in a way distinctively Miamian.”
Participants enjoyed a meat-free selection of croquettes and strong coffee as they celebrated the pig's pardon.
