The Red Devils Poised to Sign German Striker Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich
The Women's Super League club are finalising completing the signing for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Major Signing for United
Schüller, who has six months left on her deal, is known as a consistent goalscorer for her club and the national team. She has netted over 100 goals for the German giants and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. Her arrival will be seen as a marquee signing for the Women’s Super League team.
Her exit from Munich has been anticipated since she was seen fighting back tears while thanking the German club’s supporters after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
Reports in December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was losing one of its leading forwards. Per multiple sources, the formalities for the transfer have now been completed.
Consistent Goalscoring to Strengthen the Forward Line
The 28-year-old’s signing should represent a major uplift to the team's forward line. She has been highly reliable with her finishing in Germany’s top flight.
- For seven straight seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She claimed the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Building Steam at Carrington
Securing Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when United appear to be building momentum.
Recent on-pitch successes feature qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the winter break has brought additional business:
- The acquisition of Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a popular figure since joining in 2023.
Regarding the midfielder's extension, a senior figure commented: “She has become a critical part to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill allows her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”
Lundkvist, who has joined from a club in the NWSL, added: “You can feel how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
