Former Treasury Secretary Summers Leaves from ChatGPT Maker's Leadership
One-time economic leader Larry Summers is exiting the board at the artificial intelligence firm, just a week after a collection of digital correspondence between him and deceased financier Jeffrey Epstein became public.
The economist remarked in a release that he was "grateful for the chance to have contributed, optimistic about the prospects of the company, and anticipate observing their advancement".
The former Harvard president, who previously led the prestigious university, declared on Monday that he would be withdrawing from public roles due to his relationship with the convicted sex offender.
Digital Correspondence
The freshly disclosed messages demonstrated that Summers corresponded with the financier until the eve of Epstein's 2019 detention for suspected trafficking of minors.
In additional comments, the AI firm said it accepted the economist's determination to depart.
"We acknowledge his numerous inputs and the insight he offered to the governing body," OpenAI stated.
Legislative Background
This development follows after the two houses of the US legislature decided on this week to approve a measure that would mandate the federal prosecutors to release its documents on Jeffrey Epstein.
The bill will afterward move to the office of the White House for endorsement. The President has indicated he plans to sign the measure, after changing his position on the subject following objections from his supporters.
Message Details
A group of Epstein-connected correspondence released by the legislative panel days ago referenced several high-profile figures in the Epstein's previous network, without implying any illegal behavior by those figures.
The communications showed that the professor and the financier regularly had dinners together, with he often seeking to link the academic to influential global figures.
Personal Response
After the correspondence were made available with the general audience, he expressed he assumed "complete accountability for my poor choice to continue communicating with the financier".
He further stated that he desired "to reestablish trust and mend relationships with the individuals closest to me".
Career Background
The professor occupied high-level positions under party leaders; serving as economic leader under Bill Clinton, and as head of the National Economic Council under Barack Obama.
He headed Harvard from 2001 to 2006 and remains a academic there. When declaring his withdrawal from public commitments recently on this week, he indicated he would maintain his teaching commitments.
Other Impacts
Following his statement on Monday, the Center for American Progress, a progressive research organization in Washington where Summers was a senior fellow, announced that the economist was ceased to be associated with the organization.
Summers became part of the board of the technology firm, which develops the AI chatbot, in last year - following a defeated move to remove its chief executive the company leader.
