England's fly-half Ford opts to stay with Sale instead of R360 opportunity

Rugby player the fly-half
George Ford earned his century of appearances for England against Argentina in recent months

George Ford has confirmed that he declined an approach from R360 to extend his England journey

The veteran athlete has signed a new three-year deal with Sale Sharks, where he has played 44 games and accumulated over 300 points since joining in 2022

National Team Dedication

England had earlier confirmed that any athletes who participate in R360's global circuit, similar to other players based overseas, would be not available for Test selection

"The organization reached out to my representative to have discussions, but my decision-making around it was entirely focused on the reality that I've got tremendous desire to represent England," commented Ford

"I've enjoyed my period at the club as well and it didn't progress any beyond than that in terms of negotiations with the proposed new league"

"I love and I'm passionate about playing for my nation. I want to have the chance to represent my national team still. I believe I've continue to have a lot to give in a white shirt"

Competition Development

The organization's goal of establishing eight elite squads for a series of events in prominent locations was hit by a unified restriction from major rugby bodies last week

England, New Zealand, Ireland and the French were joined by Scotland, the Wallabies, the Springboks and Italy in declaring they would not pick any R360 recruits for Test rugby

Monetary Considerations

Director of rugby Alex Sanderson calculated that, for top athletes like Ford, a transfer to the new competition could earn them a third more than remaining in the domestic league

He noted that transfers to Japan could be a chance to double their money, while tax breaks for athletes enhance the financial advantage of Top 14 clubs

Team Importance

"It's fundamental for this club, essential for the team progressing, that we retain him at the leadership position," said Sanderson

"It's bigger than just how brilliant he is on the field"

"It is where he's from, his desire to take the group and how highly motivated he is"

"He's a motivational force for me as a manager, not just the players that he plays with"

"This represents a massive, major show of intent from him for the direction the team is heading"

Competition Situation

The player admitted the present talent pool of number tens is exceptional during his time with England, with ex-captain the experienced player returned at his club and in contention for a selection again

"It's excellent, isn't it? It's the ideal situation to be truly in terms of squad depth. I'd think Steve Borthwick is quite happy having four options available," commented Ford

"Selection is so subjective. That's sort of a partially out of my control currently, because my main focus at the minute is performing as effectively as I can for Sale"

"If I worry too much about if I'm going to get picked, I'm not going to get selected. It takes me away from my role in the here and now"

Coach's Perspective

The director however was definite in his backing for his player

"There's only one George Ford," he said

"Perhaps you could secure a match by ten to fifteen more points with a Marcus Smith. I think you'll certainly lose less games with him because he virtually makes it inevitable with what he does with the possession that the outcome is going to favor your team"
