England to Begin Euro 2028 Quest at City’s Home Ground

The English squad will initiate their 2028 European Championship adventure at the Etihad Stadium, provided that they secure the expected qualification for a competition taking place in the majority of the UK and the Ireland.

City’s stadium has not hosted an Three Lions fixture since May 2016, when Turkey were overcome 2-1 in a friendly, but is highly likely to host the national team for their inaugural game on a Saturday in June 2028.

The team are set to play their last two group stage games at the national stadium, but, should they win their group, their last-16 tie would take place at the Newcastle stadium. Finishing second would mean commencing the playoffs at Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Tournament Opening and Protest

The tournament was launched at an ceremony in a London landmark on Wednesday night. High-ranking officials from the tournament organizers and the organizing bodies were barracked as they entered the site by around fifty pro-Palestine demonstrators, who demanded Israel to be expelled from the sport because of the conflict in Gaza.

Banners were raised with messages reading “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while protesters called out: “Kick Israel out.”

Event Fixture List

The opening game of the European Championship will be held at the Cardiff’s stadium in the Welsh capital, on a Friday in June 2028, a fixture that will feature the Welsh team if they make it.

Wembley will host the penultimate rounds and the championship match, which will be held on Sunday 9 July with a start time at 5:00 PM.

It is expected that an earlier kick-off, which will also be implemented for UEFA Champions League finals from the following campaign, will cater to family audiences and help connect with a more diverse set of viewers.

Participating Countries

The Republic of Ireland are scheduled to play their initial fixture at the Dublin stadium and Scotland would play similarly at Glasgow’s Hampden Park.

Each host nation’s squad will participate in the qualification process; two guaranteed slots will be held in reserve for any that miss out on Euro 2028 through the standard process.

Stadiums and Elimination Phase

The Birmingham venue and Tottenham Hotspur Stadium complete the nine host stadiums. Every stadium will hold at least one knockout match, with the quarterfinal matches played at the national stadium of each host.

The qualifying draw will be staged in Belfast, which was removed as a tournament location last year when it was revealed Casement Park could not be renovated in time, on a date in late 2026.

Leadership Comment

“This will be a tournament for the supporters and a festival of everything we value about the sport – its fervor and capacity to unite individuals.”

More than three million tickets, a unprecedented number for a UEFA European Championship, are anticipated to be offered to attendees.
