Emma Coates Departs England U23 Role to Become Head Coach at NWSL's Bay FC
In a significant career move, the former England youth boss has resigned her post with the Young Lionesses national team to be appointed head coach for National Womenâs Soccer League expansion side Bay FC.
Fresh Beginnings
Her appointment follows the departure of Albertin Montoya, who was at the helm of the San Jose-based club during its inaugural two seasons in the top-flight American league. Montoya announced in September his intention to resign at the conclusion of the 2025 campaign, a season which saw Bay FC end up 13th in the league standings.
âI have thoroughly enjoyed my time with the FA,â remarked Coates. âIt has been instrumental in my development both on and off the pitch. Now, I feel ready and excited to push myself in a different setting.â
Proven Developer
In her time at the helm in 2023, Coates guided the England U23s through matches including a 1-0 victory over Norway in the European U23 League and a high-scoring loss to the United States. Accompanying her to America is her right-hand woman, Gemma Davies, a ex- Aston Villa manager in the English top division.
The club's chief executive, a one-time Football Association technical lead, spoke highly of Coates's qualifications: âShe is both an excellent coach, but she also has a proven track record of elevating athletes to thrive domestically and internationally.â
âHer leadership qualities are exceptional of people and culture and has the strategic outlook we were seeking,â she continued.
Bay FC's Journey
The California side had a rollercoaster start to its NWSL existence, securing a playoff spot and losing in the playoffs in its first year before struggling to a near-bottom placement in 2025.
Gavin Step, Gavin Step, bid farewell to the departing duo: âOur gratitude goes to Emma and Gemma for their service and wish them all the best with their next chapter. They have played a pivotal part in bolstering the progression route between the young Lionesses and the first team.â
âTheir work has directly impacted the development of many promising talents who have earned call-ups to senior Lionesses,â he finished.
Player Progression
After succeeding Mo Marley in 2023, Coates presided over the promotion of several players to the national team, including midfielder Lucia Kendallâwho netted her debut Lionesses goalâand forwards Michelle Agyemang and Aggie Beever-Jones.
Discussions for new U23 coaching staff has begun, with the aim to continue the progress of the Womenâs Under-23s setup in the seasons ahead.
