Edwards along with Gary O'Neil are two of the initial candidates under consideration to replace the former manager as manager of Wolves.

The previous coach was sacked on Sunday following the squad's 10-match winless beginning to the Premier League season.

And both candidates - each of whom have previous links to the team - are among the options to be considered by the club ownership.

Edwards is currently at Middlesbrough, which would pose a potential hurdle to his hiring at Molineux.

However the ex- Luton manager - who played over a century of appearances for the club during his playing career - is said to be a leading contender for the vacancy.

The 42-year-old is reportedly enjoys backing from the club directors as they begin the process of appointing a new manager.

O'Neil is additionally emerging as a surprise candidate, even though he would be a surprising appointment considering he was sacked by Wolves in December last year.

The ex- West Ham midfielder is out of work which means the club would not be required to provide any compensation.
