Ceramic Gift, Any Takers? Meloni to Sell World Leaders' Gifts for Good Cause
Getting rid of undesired offerings might be viewed as slightly impolite – except if it's done in the proper manner.
A Philanthropic Sale
The Italian premier, Giorgia Meloni, plans to auction an estimated 270 gifts given to her by world leaders on official trips. The eclectic collection is said to contain gifts including a chainsaw-wielding statuette of Argentina's leader Javier Milei and a pair of exotic blue snake-skin shoes with gold heels.
The collection, collectively, have an approximate value of €800,000. They are scheduled to be sold in a public auction by a Rome-based auction firm. The specific date has not been finalized, although the intention is to conduct the sale during the holiday season, with all funds raised going to a selection of charitable causes.
Palazzo Chigi Holdings
These gifts are said to be stored in a secure area on the third floor of Palazzo Chigi. It has been reported that Meloni furthermore intending to auction off gifts given to her predecessors that have been gathering dust over a long period.
The full gift list is yet to be disclosed, but partial details were revealed earlier this year when an 11-page list of all declared gifts was submitted to lawmakers. The discussion raised if a legal value limit was being honored. By law, a prime minister is not permitted to keep presents exceeding €300.
An International Assortment of Gifts
The collection includes:
- A woven wrap from the leader of Albania, allegedly presented to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
- A sari from Kerala from the Indian leader.
- A set of adornments from the Slovakian president.
- A fine china tea service and a selection of wines from the Hungarian prime minister.
- A pottery dish from the former US president.
- A digital device from the Ukrainian president.
- Artworks from the Moldovan government.
- Additional objects including makeup, a board, and several rugs from trips to North African and Middle Eastern countries.
"Possibly the most unusual gifts were the Milei figurine and the exotic footwear," one might note.
Diplomatic Backdrop
Meloni has been credited, particularly from her allies, with building relationships with global statesmen and positioning Italy as a prominent force on the international platform once again.
The forthcoming sale symbolizes a novel approach to manage the diplomatic artifacts that are collected during a political career.
