Brendon McCullum Finalizes The Ashes Series Backroom Team with Australian David Saker's Reappearance
Brendon McCullum has confirmed his support personnel ahead of the Ashes series, featuring David Saker from Australia returning to help England for a fourth Test campaign versus his native country.
Saker's Role and Timeline
The coach, formally titled as special skills consultant, is scheduled for Australia starting with the England Lions' arrival in early November staying with the main squad across all five matches.
Tim Southee, who has had an identical role since May currently with the limited-overs team within New Zealand, will persist with the squad up until Perth's first Test concludes.
Additional Coaching Additions
An additional returnee includes Gilbert Enoka, previous All Blacks mental skills coach, who was first brought into the group ahead of the Test match facing India at Old Trafford during July.
Enoka, who lives in Christchurch, is also working with the white-ball squad engaged for the opening Ashes match.
Team Sessions and Player Feedback
Recently, Enoka conducted an hour-long session for the entire squad and coaching staff, while completing T20 series preparations versus New Zealand beginning Saturday.
Harry Brook, earlier committing to avoid meetings as white-ball skipper, emerged to describe Enoka as “awesome”.
“These matters remain internal,” he commented. “He brings a lot of knowledge about the mental side of the game. His availability for quick conversations is exceptional.”
Continuing Coaching Staff
The long-term batting coach Marcus Trescothick and the spin-bowling coach Jeetan Patel, another New Zealander, will persist in their positions.
David Saker's Coaching History
Saker, now 59, previously acted as England’s fast bowling coach between 2010 and 2015, during which time they won the Ashes in Australia.
Later, he occupied a similar position with Australia from 2016 to 2019 then came back to England in 2023.
Player Endorsements
Recently, Brook commended Southee's input to the team.
“He possesses vast expertise,” mentioned the 26-year-old. “Having played extensively here and globally, his guidance significantly helps us.”
