Australia's captain Set to Play a Significant Contribution in Iconic Rivalry

Test match action

The pace bowler has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has confirmed that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest kicking off on November 21 in Western Australia.

He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about the prospects of participating.

"We know that the clock is ticking and there are permutations at play, not just the back issue, but additional elements," he commented.

"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he will feature a key capacity. Ideally starting in Perth. If not, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand recently after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from three Australian summers in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the series.

Bailey noted that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from the national team for their one-day international series against India as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

Bailey described it as a "small issue and confirmed that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs anyway. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
