Antony Price, the influential UK-based designer who crafted many legendary styles worn by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has sadly died at the age of 80.

His reputation was built on his sculptured silhouettes and theatrical styles, including the light-hued ensembles that became famous from rock band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "Rio".

"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance on social media."

Price's death comes just weeks after he debuted his newest line in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Singer Lily Allen walked in a dress that paid homage to the iconic black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" once worn by Princess Diana.

An Enduring Influence

Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price relocated to London during the sixties to enroll at the prestigious Royal College of Art.

Upon completing his studies, he began designing men's fashion at Stirling Copper and was the creator of the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger wore during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He launched his own brand in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show opened with creations worn by supermodel Jerry Hall, who later wore the bridal gown Price specifically designed for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.

Working with Legends

A long-time collaborator of David Bowie, Price created the distinctive jacket the artist wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His trademark skill to merge elements of men's and women's fashion along with his technical proficiency in shaping sculptural silhouettes cemented his status as a "one-of-a-kind talent," in the words of the British Fashion Council.

During the nineties, he started creating ensembles for Camilla, now Queen Consort, such as several ensembles for her tour of the United States after assuming the title.

Following a profession lasting more than five decades, Price presented his final runway show in London recently in partnership with the label 16Arlington.

  • Architectural Forms: The core of his aesthetic.
  • Performative Style: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
  • Genre-Blending Design: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
  • A Client List from Rock to Royalty: Spanning iconic musicians and members of the royal family.

The fashion world says farewell to a authentic original whose impact on fashion and music remains indelibly etched.
