Adult Swim's Top New Show of This Year Earns a Significant Renewal for an Additional Two Seasons.

In October of last year, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, not long after, the network launched a brand-new animated series with a strikingly different tone. Haha, You Clowns emerged as heartwarming and calm, evoking a animated take of a serene talk show. At a time often defined by bleakness, this show's earnestness found an audience and propelled it a surprise hit.

A Major Commitment

On December 18th, the network confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two more seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to develop the world of the Campbell family. The series centers on three polite teenage brothers whose central trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four central characters.

"I’m so grateful to the audience of the show who took a chance on the show and shared it with others," said Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for seasons to come."

Executive Acclaim

In the same announcement laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He specifically highlighted the fans who discovered the show and supported its peculiarly charming style.

"All of you got behind this new show, championed for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Wholesome Alternative

Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something deeply soothing about observing this charming family go about their simple existence.

Previously, creator Joe Cappa stated his hope to move the comedy genre beyond its long-running sarcastic tone. He linked this trend to a broader media landscape.

“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” said Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we must laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”

What Comes Next

Now, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa could potentially help usher in that very evolution. Or at the very least, the renewal guarantees audiences additional episodes to experience the heartfelt moments of the endearing Campbell clan.

The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The complete first season is ready to watch on HBO Max.
