A Tale of Unexpected Kindness: The Time a Student Let Me Sleep on Her Dorm Ground
During 2006, I made a trip to the Australian capital for an interview at a medical college. I figured to book lodging after getting there, but upon reaching the city, a large conference was in town and all the backpackers hostels and cheap hotels were fully booked.
Coming from the city-state of Singapore, I thought perhaps I could spend the night at the airport – but quickly found the local airport, in contrast to Changi Airport, is not open all night. With no idea what my next move should be and growing worried, I hopped on a city-bound bus and started wandering near a gaming venue, thinking I could pass those hours in a place that stayed open all night. Admittedly, this plan in the best shape to succeed at a crucial interview the following day, however, being a broke student, I couldn’t afford.
Our society requires more folks with such compassion.
Apparently, I appeared out of place as a young woman noticed me wandering around the city center and wondered if I was OK. I recounted my situation and without hesitation she offered I could sleep on the floor of her dormitory at the Australian National University – which was perfect, considering that was where my interview was scheduled for the next day. She even offered a meal: a leftover stuffed baguettes she brought back her evening job. This gave me a hot shower and somewhere safe to rest for the evening.
With hindsight, it’s clear to me the enormous leap of faith she took as a woman allowing a man she had only just encountered crash at her place. At that time I was in my male privilege bubble and not even thinking to the potential danger. As a dad now, I am astonished she did that – and remain deeply appreciative.
I never did study at ANU, and I never saw that kind stranger again, but I’ve never forgotten her amazing act of human compassion. It is my wish karma has repaid her generosity abundantly. The world needs more folks who show such kindness.
